Flea Control Across Cumbria & North Lancashire

Professional Flea Inspections & Treatments for Homes, Rental Properties and Businesses

Few pests can make a property feel uncomfortable as quickly as fleas.

Whether you’re dealing with persistent bites, pets that won’t stop scratching, or an infestation in a vacant property, fleas can rapidly become a frustrating and ongoing problem if not dealt with properly.

Many people associate fleas exclusively with cats and dogs, but infestations can originate from a variety of sources including birds, rabbits and rodents. Once established, fleas can spread throughout a property and remain present long after the original host has disappeared.

At Tidal Environmental Services, we provide professional flea inspections and treatments throughout Cumbria and North Lancashire, including Kendal, Windermere, Ulverston, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Morecambe and the wider South Lakes region.

Our treatments are designed to eliminate active infestations, break the flea lifecycle and help prevent the problem from returning.

Understanding Fleas

Fleas are small parasitic insects that survive by feeding on blood.

While adult fleas are usually the most visible stage of an infestation, they often account for only a small percentage of the total flea population within a property.

A typical flea infestation consists of:

  • Adult fleas
  • Eggs
  • Larvae
  • Pupae

This is why simply killing visible fleas rarely solves the problem.

Successful flea control requires targeting the entire lifecycle.

Expert Insight

One of the most common calls we receive involves vacant properties.

Many people are surprised when they move into an empty property and suddenly experience flea bites despite there being no pets present.

This happens because fleas can enter a dormant stage known as diapause, which is effectively the insect equivalent of hibernation.

Fleas can remain inactive for up to 6 months in generally conditions and up to 12 months if conditions are perfect.

It’s one of the reasons flea infestations can appear to come out of nowhere.

Where Do Fleas Come From?

Although cats and dogs are the most common source of flea infestations, they are by no means the only source.

Other potential origins include:

  • Bird nesting activity
  • Rodent infestations
  • Rabbits and other wildlife
  • Previous pet ownership
  • Vacant properties
  • Shared accommodation
  • Imported furniture or furnishings

Identifying the source is a key part of successful treatment. Without doing so, the infestation may simply return.

Signs You May Have a Flea Problem

Flea infestations are not always immediately obvious.

  • Frequent bites, usually around the ankles and lower legs.
  • Pets scratching excessively.
  • Small dark insects visible in carpets, furnishings, or pet bedding.
  • Tiny black specks (flea dirt) on bedding or furniture.
